Cardiac Anesthesia

Teaching on the Cardiac Anesthesia Service is designed to produce fully-trained clinicians capable of providing state-of-the-art anesthesia for patients with cardiac and vascular disease. The pathophysiology and perioperative implications of cardiac and vascular disease are emphasized along with the principles of cardiopulmonary bypass, myocardial preservation, intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation, and transesophageal echocardiography. In addition, the delivery of anesthesia for cardiac transplantation and implantation of automatic implantable cardiac defibrillators serves to broaden the clinical experience.

Core areas of research include evaluation of the impact of cardiopulmonary bypass on the inflammatory response, weaning from mechanical ventilation, cardiovascular monitoring, development of TEE quality assurance mechanisms and educational materials, and the study of renal function.
