In its ninth year, the Section of Pediatric Anesthesia continued to provide excellent anesthetic and analgesic care for children undergoing surgery in the Pediatric Surgery Center, and pain management for pediatric patients in the Children's Hospital. Not only has the role of the Pediatric Anesthesia Section within the Children's Hospital continued to broaden, but also the case load has increased significantly over previous years. The strategic plan developed by our section includes expanding our clinical database, redesigning the pain and sedation service, defining a year-specific educational plan for our residents, and instituting additional major research initiatives.
As in the past, the Section continues to have an outstanding national reputation for its academic activities. Members of the section published multiple articles in peer reviewed literature and gave numerous lectures at national meetings and at other academic institutions. In addition, members of the section were awarded significant funding last year from the National Institutes of Health (NICHD), the Donaghue Medical Research Foundation and other commercial sources. The Section also continues to be known for its excellence in resident training. The extensive breadth and depth of training received by residents is accomplished through a uniform case exposure, as well as a series of core specialty lectures in pediatric anesthesia. The clinical ACGME-approved fellowship program in Pediatric Anesthesia is notable for the quality of clinical training and extensive clinical research experience, as well as our high success in job placement for our fellows. In addition, Pediatric Critical Care fellows are required to rotate through Pediatric Anesthesia, and our elective for Pediatric residents increases in popularity each year.
