About New Haven

New Haven was founded in 1636 and is one of the country's oldest cities. Today, with a population of 125,000, it retains the charm of a small New England town while offering the best attributes of a large city. Situated on Long Island Sound, New Haven is conveniently located to both Boston and New York.

New Haven is probably best known for being home to Yale University, which dominates the center of the city. Yale brings a long tradition of educational and cultural richness to the city through special lectures, libraries and events.

For theater lovers, the Yale Repertory Theatre is renown for its avant-garde performances, while the Shubert Performing Arts Center offers touring company productions of many famous Broadway musicals.

For classical music lovers, there is the Yale Symphony Orchestra, while jazz enthusiasts will undoubtedly appreciate the summertime New Haven Jazz Festival. For museum enthusiasts, the Yale Center for British Art and the Peabody Museum of Natural History offer outstanding permanent collections and special exhibitions.

The diverse nature of the city and surrounding communities presents a wide range of residential options. Hi-rise apartments and renovated brownstones are located within fifteen minutes of the medical center. Condominiums, townhouses or single family homes are available in some of the best school districts of the state.

Because of its shoreline location, virtually all forms of recreational water activities are available from sailing to swimming to fishing. A short drive north offers prime spots for hiking, camping, and canoeing. In addition, Vermont and New Hampshire have outstanding downhill ski resorts and cross-country venues.

Connecticut offers a contrasting blend of urban and country lifestyles. New Haven is a contemporary city, yet still tied to its colonial roots; its cultural and recreational pleasures are yours to explore and enjoy.
